Jake Locker Is Returning To UW... For What?
If Jake Locker had any brain in his head he would be sprinting for the door now that he is eligible for the NFL Draft.
This makes you wonder why the Huskies' signal caller has recently informed the team he will return for his season instead.
Locker is projected by most draft experts to be a top pick, and one of the top quarterbacks taken in this year's NFL Draft. Despite this, he is returning to play for a program that has never had a winning season in his time in Seattle, winning four, zero and most recently five games. This is why this decision is as puzzling as it is.
There's no doubting that UW is vastly improved over new head coach Steve Sarkisian, yet are hopes for next season that high? Sure, the Huskies will return their top rusher, receiver and passer, but that was for a team that failed to make a bowl game.
Washington had some remarkable victories in 2009, defeating #3 USC and #19 California, especially considering this was a team that didn't win one game the year before. But it's not like they held their own in their losses, getting absolutely demolished by Oregon, Oregon State, rival Washington State and Stanford.
Sam Bradford, the Oklahoma Sooners star QB bypassed the draft to come back for his senior season this year only to get injured for the entire season and stand on the sidelines as he watched his draft stock plummet. At least Bradford had a reason to want to come back, as the Sooners had a great shot at winning the national championship. Same cannot be said for Washington.
I'm all for guys coming back for their senior season to graduate and play another year of college ball, but in this case the risk far outweighs the reward.
