Aaron Rodgers is helping a Jets rookie in a way he’s never done before
Jake Crandall / USA TODAY NETWORK

I’ll admit it. I’m an old school kind of guy when it comes to football. I appreciate effort and “team first” mentality sometimes more than I appreciate pure skill. I realize that the latter is needed, but I think sometimes we forget the former is needed as well.

I want rookies to come in humble and eager to learn. I want them to believe in their skill while also understanding that they have a lot to learn.

So far, Malachi Corley is checking that box.

The Jets drafted Corley with the first pick of the third round of last week’s NFL draft. They spent most of day two trying to move up to get the wide receiver before finally finding a trade partner in the Carolina Panthers who grabbed an extra pick from the Jets and allowed the Jets to get the guy they wanted in Corley. The Jets selected Corley with the No. 65 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft after four seasons at Western Kentucky.

Corley got drafted and then did what you would want an incoming rookie wide receiver to do: call his future Hall of Fame quarterback. Corley reached out to Rodgers after being selected and jokingly said that he is going to move in with the 40-year-old quarterback to learn as much as he can.

"Hopefully me and him get real close and I get to pick his brain and see all of the things that he's done to have sustained success in this league," Corley said. "I'm ready for it."

Turns out, it might not have been a joke.

Corley told reporters on Friday that the four-time MVP offered to let the third-round pick stay in his guest house for training camp. The 22-year-old added that he's planning on taking Rodgers up on the offer. While it isn’t known what the QB will charge the rookie in rent, Corley doesn’t plan to live at Rodgers’ rent free.

Rodgers, for his part, was ‘excited’ about the Jets selection of Corley.

Rodgers isn’t the only Jet that Corley has been warming to. He said he’s been “idolizing” Garrett Wilson since both were in high school and is even wearing number 17 to honor Wilson who changed from 17 back to his college number five this season.

Wilson reached out to Malachi and said he’s excited to work with him. Corley said he’s looking forward learning from the veterans and also pushing them.

That is a fantastic mentality to have for an incoming rookie. So far, Malachi has been impressive with his attitude and him willingness to learn. If the Jets can find a way to maximize his talent (sorry Malachi, that is a big ‘if’ with this offensive coaching staff) than he could make a huge impact on the team this season and for years to come.
